Darrell McGraw has blazed a path of Success as West Virginia Attorney General
Since being elected Attorney General in November, 1992, Darrell McGraw, through an extensive outreach effort, has tripled the number of West Virginia consumers who receive services from the Consumer Protection Division of his office.  This has resulted in a record collection of nearly $113 million from businesses that violated the law, and the $1.8 billion landmark tobacco settlement. When West Virginia was facing the possibility of doctors fleeing the State because of high malpractice premiums, a Physicians' Mutual Fund was established to provide affordable malpractice insurance to doctors.  This fund was financed with $24 million generated by General McGraw's efforts to hold law breakers accountable.

During the 2007 legislative session, the Legislature authorized the sale of the proceeds of the tobacco settlement which generated a little over $800 million to the State.  This money has been directed toward paying down the debt in the Teachers' Retirement System.   This money is available thanks to the efforts of Attorney General Darrell McGraw.

In an attempt to deal with the astronomical Workers Compensation debt, the West Virginia Legislature dedicated a half billions dollars to the fund from money the Attorney General's Office brought into the state with its landmark litigation on behalf of West Virginia residents.

In the 11th hour of the sale of American Water to RWE Thames, Attorney General McGraw intervened before the Public Service Commission to negotiate provisions that may prevent West Virginia water from being extracted and sold out of state for corporate profit without compensation to West Virginia.

In 2004, the Attorney General's Office under the direction of Attorney General Darrell McGraw, was the first party in the country to hold Purdue Pharma accountable for its illegal marketing practices, resulting in the State of West Virginia receiving $6,280,831.00.  This money has been used to fund day report centers and substance abuse programs across the State.  McGraw's vision in funding day report centers has the potential to save counties millions of dollars in jail costs.
